TARZAN FINDS A SON! (1939)

Dir. Richard Thorpe

See how MGM created darkest Africa on their own Culver City back lot! Learn how the studio could put Boy in danger without risking Johnny Sheffield's life (or violating child labor laws)! Discover the movie magic behind Tarzan's famous yell! The secrets of Golden Age Hollywood come to life in this screening of the fourth film in MGM's Tarzan series, preceded by a special presentation by two Oscar-winners, matte painter Craig Barron and sound editor and designer Ben Burtt. They have been doing similar presentations for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for years, unveiling behind-the-scenes information about such classics as The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) and Forbidden Planet (1956). TARZAN FINDS A SON! is of special interest because of the existence of well-preserved printing elements and the top-quality work done at MGM, and this Festival screening features a print struck from the original negative held by the Academy. The film also holds a special place in fans' hearts as the one that introduced Boy to the series.

In attendance: Craig Barron, Ben Burtt.

This screening is presented with a new 35mm print courtesy of the Academy Film Archive.
